Effectiveness Study of Waste Management Based on TPS 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle): Case Study of TPS 3R Karangmiri

Abstract

Waste management is one of the major challenges faced by modern society. Along with population growth and increasing economic activities, the volume of waste generated has also increased significantly. The 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) waste management facility, known as TPS 3R, is one of the concepts aimed at reducing the burden of waste sent to final disposal sites (TPA). This study aims to identify the extent to which the community-based TPS 3R waste management program has succeeded in reducing the amount of waste generated by the community. The research was conducted at TPS 3R Karangmiri, located in Umbulharjo District, Yogyakarta City, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using the recovery factor formula, Slovin formula, and Likert scale. These methods meet scientific principles for determining and assessing the scoring of research instruments. The results showed that the effectiveness of waste management based on TPS 3R Karangmiri achieved a recovery factor value of 56.61% and a residue value of 43.39%. Based on the recovery factor value, the waste management performance can be categorized as quite effective, although several existing facilities at TPS 3R Karangmiri remain inadequate. In addition, this study found that the level of community participation was relatively high, reaching 86.34%, as obtained from questionnaire results in the TPS 3R Karangmiri service area.
